International expert book in development

Why do children experience falling asleep so differently around the world?

For the book project “What Really Helps Children Fall Asleep”, I am looking for 50 expert voices from science, psychology, pedagogy, child sleep, family support and international practice.

The central question is what supports children when falling asleep and what families can learn from different bedtime cultures, disciplines and everyday experiences.

The idea

Not another guidebook with one single method

Many families look for answers when their child struggles to settle in the evening. At the same time, bedtime rituals, sleep environments, nap routines, educational settings and family rhythms vary greatly around the world.

This book documents different professional and cultural perspectives: What does science say? What do educators observe? Which rituals have proven helpful in family life? And what can we learn from other countries?

The central guiding question

Which factors help children fall asleep from a scientific, pedagogical and cultural point of view?

Why this project matters

Child sleep is family life, development and culture at the same time

Falling asleep affects almost every family, yet it is understood and supported in very different ways. Some cultures place more emphasis on closeness, others on independence, fixed routines, flexible family rhythms, stories, music or rest periods in educational settings.

The book aims to make this diversity visible and bring expert knowledge together in a way that helps readers find answers that fit their own family or professional environment.

What readers can take from it

Orientation instead of pressure

The book is not intended to prescribe one rigid sleep method. It is designed to show which approaches exist, what experiences stand behind them and which scientific or practical considerations support them.

Families, professionals and interested readers should be able to discover different answers and choose what fits their child, family, institution or evening routine.

Participation

Online interview or written contribution

Participation is designed to be simple: as an online conversation or in writing. An online interview usually takes around 30 to 45 minutes. The questions will be adapted to your expertise, your country and your experience with children, families or educational settings.

01 · Brief alignment

We clarify which professional, scientific or cultural perspective you would like to contribute.

02 · Interview or written answers

You answer the questions in an online conversation or in writing. The focus is on expert knowledge, experience and concrete observations.

03 · Review

Before publication, the selected content will be reviewed and agreed upon so your contribution is represented appropriately.

Value for contributors

How your participation strengthens your professional visibility

Your perspective will become part of an international book project that does not look at child sleep in a one-dimensional way, but brings together scientific knowledge, pedagogical experience and cultural differences.

For experts, participation can strengthen professional positioning: as a voice in child sleep, family support, pedagogy, psychology, relaxation or bedtime cultures.

Professional positioning: Visibility as an expert in an international book project on child sleep.
Profile in the book: Presentation with name, area of expertise, short profile, website or social media profile.
Linking: Optional QR code to a website, Instagram profile, offer page or selected free resource.
Social media: Selected insights can be presented on the website, Instagram and other channels.
Own use: Agreed content may be used by both sides for websites, newsletters or social media.
Future perspective: Workshops, online sessions, expert panels or joint offers may develop from the project.

Would you like to check whether your area of expertise fits? A short message is enough.

Guiding questions

What we can talk about

The questions will be adapted to your expertise, your country and your experience. Possible guiding questions may include:

What helps children fall asleep from a scientific perspective? How do bedtime rituals differ around the world? What role do parents, closeness, routines and independence play? How are naps and rest periods supported in daycare and preschool settings? Which cultural habits influence child sleep? What can families learn from other countries? Which mistakes arise from exhaustion, pressure or lack of orientation? What fits each family?
Multilingual by design

English, German and Spanish

The book project is designed to be international and multilingual. Contributions can be translated, and selected insights can be presented in English, German and Spanish.

Future workshops or expert formats can also be offered in different languages, depending on the language and expertise of the people involved.

A shared perspective

What can families and professionals from different countries and disciplines learn from one another?
